CHILD PROTECTION TRAINING – VYS is again running one day training sessions for those in the voluntary sector. The dates are

Understanding and Using an Outcomes Focus – This 2 day FREE course aims to equip participants to introduce an outcomes focus within their own organisation. NAVCA Skild (Skills and Knowledge for Local Development) - there are a number of courses being run in coming months covering topics such as ‘Project management’, ‘Being a new development worker’ and ‘Making partnerships work’. www.skild.org.uk LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT - Third Sector organisations will be eligible for an extended leadership and management programme through Train to Gain, the government's flagship skills service. From January 2009, funding rules will be relaxed so that third sector employees will also be able to access more flexible training support, delivered when and where they need it, including: Stand-alone accredited training modules and part-qualifications in essential areas like business systems, communications, sales and marketing, information technology, customer service, new product design, finance and credit, cash flow and profit management, and risk management; and fully funded Level 2 qualifications and subsidised level 3 qualifications, regardless of whether the employee already has a qualification at this level. THE CHILDREN'S SOCIETY Training & Consultancy Service aims to work with practitioners and professionals within the statutory and voluntary sectors to make England a safer place for children & young people. They are running a number of courses in Bristol in February 2009 as follows:

SPORTS LEADERS UK provides nationally recognised leadership qualifications and awards through the media of sport, dance, basic expedition, language, maths and literacy that help people whatever their age or background, develop essential life skills such as organising, motivating, communicating and working with others. It offers a 1 day tutor training course for anyone who wishes to deliver these courses to their young people. The days are fun and practical by nature and give you all the information you need to set up and deliver a leadership course within your organisation. For more information see www.sportsleaders.org
PRINCE’S TRUST TEAM PROGRAMMES - These are run in Devon by TTS who are now recruiting for 2009 courses due to start in January/February in Bude, Barnstaple, Bideford, Ilfracombe, Tiverton & Torquay. The 12 week programme is FREE and available to young people aged 16-25 and they can be in receipt of benefits while on the course and there is also help with travel costs too. The course is designed to give young people more confidence and self esteem and to help them try to find more direction in their lives. TTS welcome enquiries from anyone, although the course is aimed at the unemployed, those in or leaving care, ex-offenders and educational under achievers. The qualification to be gained on the course is a City & Guilds Certificate in Personal, Teamwork and Community skills and there are no exams and TTS can provide one-to-one help for those with learning disabilities. FREE CORE MEDIATION SKILLS COURSE (focused on homelessness and the community) - The CWDC Workforce Strategy Partners Programme is providing funding to support the involvement of Devon’s Private and Third Sectors in local integrated children’s workforce strategies. Young Devon is co-ordinating training as part of the programme. Dealing with Challenging Behaviour was identified as a key area in the workforce development audit of the sector undertaken by Young Devon. The Core Mediation Skills Programme (accredited by the OCR) is a course which will assist in developing these skills and enable you to develop your tool kit for dealing with challenging behaviour. YOUNG PEOPLE AND MONEY is a free, one day training course that delivers financial capability training to those working with 'NEET' young people. The course is designed to improve their confidence by better equipping them to support their young people in becoming financially capable. Free materials designed to support participants and their organisations are given on the day. Lifeline are looking for organisations in this area to host this training course and are offering a free netbook as an incentive! MENTORING AND BEFRIENDING FOUNDATION (MBF) provides a programme of courses with Exeter as one of the venues for delivery. THE TERRENCE HIGGINS TRUST is offering free sexual health training to professionals working with young people across England and Wales. The training sessions will cover topics including sex and relationships education, HIV awareness, tackling homophobia and creating inclusive school and youth settings for lesbian, gay and bisexual young people. Funded by the Children’s Workforce Development Council (CWDC), the directory brings together the training provided by NCVYS members that is accessible and open to others. FUNDING FOR NVQ’s - From 1st August 2008 CQM Learning will have limited availability to fully fund Level 2 qualifications to anyone who is currently over qualified for Train to Gain funding. For example, if someone has a BTEC, a Degree, an NVQ Level 2 in another subject or over 5 GCSEs, CQM will be able to place them onto an NVQ Level 2 with full funding. Only a small percentage of funding will be allocated to this initiative, therefore the places are strictly first come first served. TRAIN TO GAIN – A government scheme that gives funding to organisations to improve the skills of their workforces has been extended to cover volunteers working with third sector groups. The initiative has always been available to paid employees in the third sector, but now volunteers will also benefit. Under the scheme, employees contact 'skills brokers', who will visit their organisations, at no cost, to provide impartial advice and help employers find training programmes that suit their staff. TSA (Trust for the Study of Adolescence) runs a range of training courses for practitioners working with young people. Topics covered include working with troubled teenagers, developing positive self-esteem, building resilience in young people, living with teenagers in foster care, young people and self-harm and much more. EXETER CVS – the new training programme is now available, with over 60 workshops and courses available. There are a number of City and Guilds and NOCN accredited courses as well as single day courses on subjects such as ICT, supporting volunteers, governance etc. Included is NOCN Level 2 Skills Development Diploma for Progression The course has been developed to provide staff and volunteers with an opportunity to develop day to day work based skills. All 11 units create the Diploma for Progression award at Level 2. Also City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma for IT Users - This course is suitable for anyone wishing to develop their skills and/or achieve a Level 2 qualification in IT skills. This course and the NOCN Level 2 would normally cost £800 but are being provided FREE apart from a small administration fee of £104.
