The Market Centre was established in October 1995 as a safe and neutral venue for young people to meet. The Centre is in the centre of Tiverton and provides essential assistance to young people who would otherwise have nowhere else to go.

This, in conjunction with developing good relationships with all its young people, has meant the Centre has developed a good working relationship with a number of agencies.

The young people see the Market Centre as THEIR Centre. They take an active part in assisting all aspects of the day to day running of the Centre and are involved in fund raising and meetings at varying levels, (it must be recognised that in general these young people are unaccustomed to attending meetings and speaking publicly, so it is a great achievement for them personally as well as being of benefit to the centre).

Some testimonials from the young people and their parents:-

"The Market Centre is a place that a huge number of young people in Tiverton NEED... I used the centre's counselling and careers service, as well as the drop-in sessions to catch up with friends in a safe, friendly environment. Now I am 21-years-old mum at college and I am hoping to become a nursery assistant in the future."

"Our 16-year-old daughter has been attending the centre for the past few years and we are very pleased with the help and advice she has received in that time. They helped at a particularly difficult time for us after our daughter started going out with an older man, who kept her away from school and got her involved with heroin. Our daughter has now got through this horrible part of her life and has started college and is looking for      part-time work. The Market Centre staff can take a lot of credit for this due to the support they have given."

“I am a 16yr old girl and have been coming to the centre for the last five yrs or so I had a rough patch where I had nearly lost all my friends and family but they pulled me through their support and courage that they gave me helped me rehabilitate to cope in life, they gave me strategies which I am still using now and probably will do for the rest of my life, I don’t know what I would of done without them!”
