GIRLGUIDING DEVON IN 2007

Our annual census shows that numbers in Guiding continue to grow, and with more adult leaders we would be able to accommodate even more of the hundreds of girls who would like to join. The appeal is understandable when you look at the amazing range of activities provided every week in over 440 Units for girls aged 5 to 25 throughout the county. Added to this there were many extra special opportunities and challenges for all age groups during 2007.

The Rainbows, aged 5-9 years, celebrated the 20th anniversary of their Section with a big party at Paignton Zoo called “The Rumble in the Jungle”. Brownies, aged 7-10 years, tried out new badges such as Designer, Healthy Heart and Number fun, and for girls from 10 to 25 there was the Guiding Star competition. Either as soloists or groups, girls performed on stage in a bid to become a national Guide pop idol. Local heats provided finalists for a county workshop day and concert, the winners going forward to the Region finals in Salisbury. All the girls really enjoyed this and showed what talented youngsters we have.

In May the SW Region of Girlguiding held its annual review in Plymouth; local girls and leaders hosted a busy weekend of events and presentations form members from Land’s End to Reading, from Gloucester to the Channel Islands and all points in between. Tavistock Balloon Fiesta in August saw the launch of Girlguiding UK’s new hot air balloon, which in September was taken by a group of young Guiders and support crew from Devon to the Himalayas in a  bid to break world records for altitude ballooning. After trekking as far up towards Everest as possible, in unpredictable weather conditions, world firsts were achieved and  Devon Guides proved that girls are as usual in the lead.

Girlguiding continues to offer such a wide range of experiences for all its members, and this will expand even more as the Association heads towards its centenary in 2010. taking Devon forward will be Mrs Sue Bullock from Torbay, who takes over as County Commissioner in April 2008. what an exciting time this will be, and Sue will of course use her expertise and enthusiasm to ensure Girlguiding remains dynamic, relevant and an attractive option to girls and women in all corners of Devon.
